God Talk and Voting for Obama...

We’ll, it’s worse than I feared.

The church that I work at on Sunday mornings is very mixed ethnically. That’s a great thing, but it sometimes leads to a weird dynamic. With a variety of ethnicities and backgrounds comes a variety of worldviews. It shouldn’t be this way in the church. You’d think we’d be united in Christ and therefore have a common view of the world based on our closely held Christian beliefs, but I guess that assumes that those holding those views of the world have thought them through. We won’t agree on everything, but at least we’ll get the core things correct. You couple this lack of coherent worldview with mystical views about God, and you’re in a lot of trouble.

I overheard a couple ladies talking after service today (one black, one white, lest you think I’m stereotyping). One lady remarked to the other about what a “great” week it had been. She was specifically referring to the election of Barack Obama. The other lady remarked that God had been speaking to her all kinds of “controversial” things about the election.

There’s two problems here:
1) They not only have no problem with Obama being elected, they’re
excited about it.
2) God told them it’s a
good thing that Obama was elected.

The second problem really reveals the problem with looking for individual special revelation from God outside of scripture. Why would God reveal something contradictory to His inspired revelation (the Bible) to an individual? I know the Bible doesn’t specifically say “Don’t vote for Obama!”, but I don’t believe that Christians who are consistent in their beliefs could vote for him in good conscience.
See my previous post for my thoughts on Christians voting for Obama... Instead of looking for external specific revelation from God, isn’t it better to actually know what Scripture teaches? At least if you know Scripture, you would be able to sort out your thoughts to know what’s from God and what isn’t. I think I’ll stick with what God has already revealed in Scripture.

As I said before, I guess Christians with coherent worldviews are hard to come by...
