"God gave me..."

I know you’ve heard this used by your pastor or fellow Christian: “God gave me (fill in the blank)...” It’s usually followed by some verse or teaching that has made a particular impression on the person speaking, but I really wonder if those prefacing their remarks with this phrase really understand what it implies?

When God speaks, He cannot err and He cannot be misunderstood. His words are authoritative and inerrant. In other words, when God speaks it is Scripture. Now maybe these things haven’t crossed the mind of those using this phrase, but, I get uncomfortable when it is just tossed off at the beginning of a sermon or in casual conversation. Often times I think it is used, somewhat unconsciously, to add weight to the message. Sometimes, it’s used to make up for the lack of conviction the speaker has about what he’s going to say. It’s become a bit too commonplace to use this phrase in Christendom. We like to toss off these kinds of sayings without thinking. I think that’s a dangerous thing to do.

Just think about it next time someone uses this phrase. They are claiming that the sermon or message they are about to convey is on the level of Scripture in its inerrancy and authority.

That’s a scary claim, and not one I’d want to make. At least, that’s the message God gave me for you today...
